THE
HOWARD DEAN LIBRARY:
Winning
Back America by Howard Dean (2003).
Dr. Dean's official campaign book is part autobiography
and part political manifesto. The tenor of most of this
book is somewhat toned-down from more fiery speeches he
gave in the early part of the campaign. In fact, Dean apologizes
here for some of his intemperate remarks. He also explains
why he should be viewed as a much more pragmatic politician
that the hardcore liberal he is frequently portrayed as.
He writes of his quiet, non-radical life as a 1960s college
student and compares his fiscal outlook to that of his wealthy
and "moderate business-oriented Republican" father.
He also has kind words for President Bush and his family,
though he turns critical on the subject of Bush's aides.
The account of his childhood and college years is largely
non-eventful. A feeling of enthusiasm sets in when he decides
to enroll in medical school (and meets his future wife).
The final sections of the book return to the Dean that is
instantly recognizable to anyone who has heard a Dean stump
speech -- and sets the tone for the upcoming campaign. List:
